A nice example of a Pre-WWI Model 1889 Cavalry Trooper's combat sword for Prussia. It is marked "W 97" on the spine and maker marked with a crown over "ERFURT" on one side of the ricasso and "OTTO MERTENS SOLINGEN" on the other. Posted 25 November , 2020 (edited) Hopefully one of our German edged weapon expert can help. The attached pics are of a Faschinenmesser I have recently acquired. It was manufactured by Otto Mertens of Solingen. I understand that this Mertens was active between 1893 and 1918. The blade is not dated but is only marked with a Gothic G.
